Fresh Breath Clinic - Bad breath/Halitosis

Bad breath (halitosis) is a common problem which often comes from the activity of bacteria in the mouth, in nearly 90% of cases. Most adults probably suffer from bad breath occasionally, with perhaps 25% suffering on a regular basis.

Is bad breath always treatable?
Bad breath is usually treatable once a proper diagnosis is made. The main problem is knowing whether we have it or not, as we are poor judges of our own breath odor.

Some people suffer from bad breath without knowing it, while others build up an exaggerated fear about breath odor even though they do not have it.

Since bad breath can sometimes, fortunately rarely, be a sign of significant general health problem, we should not be reluctant to tell people dear to us that they have a bad breath problem.

What should you do if you have bad breath?
See your dentist first, since bad breath very often comes from the mouth.

Can gum disease cause bad breath?
In some people, bad breath is associated with gum disease. Your dentist can help prevent and treat gum disease in various ways depending on the type and extent of the problem.

What can you do to help yourself?
Remember, bad breath is a problem that needs professional attention.

DO's:

  • Visit your dentist regularly.
  • Have regular, professional hygiene appointments.
  • Brush your teeth and gums properly.
  • Floss or use inter dental cleaning methods.
  • Get control over the problem.

DON'T:

  • Let your concerns about having bad breath run your life. Do something about it.
  • Rely on mouthwashes alone. They only mask the problem, temporarily. It will only get worse.
  • Delay visiting a dentist.
