Gum disease and periodontal disease are invariably always treated before the teeth are.

What is gum/ periodontal disease?
It is the inflammation of the gums around the teeth (gingivitis) which, if untreated, leads to the breakdown of the supporting structures of the tooth (periodontal disease). This inevitably leads to tooth loss in the long term.

It is caused by bacterial plaque and it is very common. Over 90% of the adult dentate population suffer from one form or another to varying degrees. Yet with the correct advice and modern treatment it is totally preventable.

What is a dental hygienist?
A hygienist specialises in all aspects of preventive dentistry and dental health education, playing a vital role in the dental team in the initial management of gum and periodontal diseases and the long-term maintenance of a healthy mouth.

This inevitably leads to less intervention treatment by your dentist and therefore reduces costs.
What does a hygienist do?

• Dental health education and diet advice (this is important as it can help reduce treatment needed and costs).
• Oral hygiene instruction.
• Scaling (removal of tartar), root planing and polishing teeth.

What Happens at the first visit?
If you have bleeding gums, bad taste/halitosis or sensitive teeth, tell your hygienist. The ensuing examination is painless and you will be advised of a suitable program of treatment and prevention. Please continue your follow-up visits recommended by your hygienist for optimum oral health, i.e. healthy mouth, fresh breath, non-bleeding gums and a confident smile.
